Project 2

The re design of the Living, Dining & Kitchen space on the Ground Floor of their Kew property and incorporate. The Utility area on the Ground Floor. Janna and Jack, a family based in Kew with two children, aged 8 and 5. The house was built in approximately 1870, the property is rooted very much in the Victorian period. Janna would like this house to be reflective of its Victorian history but with a classic contemporary twist in a coherent colour scheme.

The kitchen will be a sociable place for guests to be welcomed and areas will be easily  accessed. The layout of the kitchen will be practical and convenient for the cooks as well as using beautiful materials that are stylish yet homely. There may be a romantic corner for the couple to enjoy occasional quiet dinners together. A family environment will be crucial for the kitchen. The children will be able to eat their tea and do homework after school in a more relaxed area. The new upstairs utility  area will be moved to the entrance hall to the side door that will no longer be in use. This will give easy access for the family to do any laundry and other maintenance  work that is required for the household. The dining room will be transformed into an occasional space for plenty of guests to wine and dine. This will be a cohesive and inviting area that will be appropriate for any occasion throughout the year and changing seasons. The grand architectural Victorian features will be complementing to the  more fun yet sophisticated look of the room.

For this project, the aim is for the created environment to be an easy, elegant and welcoming space throughout the three rooms. There will aim to be a coherent colour scheme with elements to Victorian architectural details with a contemporary twist. The rooms will be grand yet incorporate homely elements. By considering the colour of the ceiling and the cornicing, rooms will feel cosier and more comfortable and cohesive yet allow a space to be classy and formal.

A family environment will be crucial for the kitchen:  for children and Pig, the family’s pet cat.

The Rationale for the choice of colours is that cool colours are welcoming. Greys are used to tie the scheme together. As you step into the room, you will fee lthe colour. Pigments of warm and cool colours in the dining room and living room will offer a restful yet fun environment to be in. The kitchen area will be opened up, to create more space. By using a calming cool tones, a harmonious calm environment will be created.  The addition of accents of bright colours including light orange and red will increase the pulse rate and give a dramatic effect. The contrasting lighter colours will help de stress. Blue will help create a calm and relaxing environment which will encourage reflection. Neutral colours will add an element of sophistication, working well with an occasional accent colour. The white in the room will help clear clutter, giving mental clarity and purity, allowing natural light to create texture which will change as the weather and time of day and seasons change.

In the kitchen, lighter neutral tones with accent colours will give a classic, quiet calm and understated look. This will connect  with the chosen concept words: “Easy, elegant and welcoming”. The kitchen will be an inviting place for the family and any guests wishing to visit. Colours and patterns of the seasons will be accentuated in the environment, as evidenced with the choice of curtains in the living room and dining room. Floral patterns will be included to brighten up the space and make it more cohesive. The dining and living space will be more of an adult and formal space which will bring a sophistication to the theme. The design of all three rooms will take into consideration how the light enters the room in the day and darkens at night. The kitchen will have the majority of the natural morning light whereas by the afternoon and evening it will appear quite dark so a consideration of artificial light will be critical. The dining room will be quite a dark room and won’t get much natural light at all as it is south facing  artificial lighting will need to be considered to make this more of a moody occasional room.
